On a hillside between Angoulême and Cognac stands the town of Jarnac, on the north bank of the Charente, a crossroads both fluvial and terrestrial. From neolithic times to the present day, Jarnac has always lived according to the flow of the river. For centuries, the town’s commerce was based on the quaysides where gabares would unload their cargoes of salt and eau-de-vie. There are some wonderful traders’ houses and cellars along the quaysides. Jarnac’s other claim to fame is that President François Mitterand was born here.
